An A-musing story

Twistynoodle.com

Today is A-Musings’s happy budday. Brace yourself for the terrible twos!

It’s tough to write the story behind your blog. How do I make it funny and interesting? What do I add that all of you do not know already? So I thought I’ll start with a candid confession. Till two years back, I had no idea what a blog was. Yes, that’s how ignorant I was. But then I left my job and started writing on a whim. A simple note on Facebook expressed my elation at being free from a clockwork precise life; a rambling that made its way to a news-forum, Drishtikone. The reaction I got for the write-up was overwhelming. I guess, as a woman trapped in a prison of her own making, I managed to strike a chord with many.

Change, is the most difficult thing to accept. Oh, how we refuse to look into its face. But once we accept it, there’s no looking back. Life is too short for us to regret what we could have done, where we could have been.

My blog was born out of desperation. When a Bangalore based forum put the spotlight on me, I realized I had no space of my own. I started with a bang and created 11 blogs for my 11 posts. It’s only when a befuddled reader pointed it out, did I discover my faux-pas and sheepishly made a new one and titled it Musings. That was before I realized that 57302 blogs exist with the same name. A few months later when the husband suggested A-Musing, I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I honestly didn’t expect anyone to read my outpourings. When I got my first comment, I almost melted with gratitude. My first ever fan (Harsh) and his group of friends will always be special to me. It seemed so surreal, a group of college kids in faraway Lucknow, sitting in their canteen, avidly discussing my write-ups. My Dad is from Lucknow and I have many happy memories attached to the city – of lazy summer afternoons, a bunch of kids furiously planning pranks, the fights we had, the joy of stealing Dusseris from the store-room, the tears that wouldn’t stop flowing every time I had to head back to Delhi. Lucknow became even more special to me.

When I joined Indiblogger, I finally saw what blogs can become. I saw bloggers with hundreds of followers and dozens of comments. I was star-struck. I wrote my first gushy, fan letter to Sharmila (she doesn’t blog anymore) and was heartbroken when she stopped corresponding after a couple of mails. I met so many wonderful people that I am willing to forget the few unpleasant episodes. I lost a friend, the same one who introduced me to blogging. He was a staunch Baba Ramdev supporter and didn’t take too kindly to my pranayam- doesn’t- mix-with- politics barb. We had a nasty showdown and haven’t spoken since.

To me, a blog is not just a platform for publishing your posts. We build a community of like-minded people who become like our family over a period of time. You share amusing anecdotes, fume at the issues they raise, cry with them, applaud their talent and reprimand them when they slip.

I discovered myself through my blog and my friends & family discovered me through my musings.

Yes, A-Musing gave me recognition, fulfilment and some heartbreak as well. I take criticism more seriously than praise and it broke my heart when my attempt at fiction did not go down well with quite a few of my readers.

I was approached by a well-known publishing house to write a book. I was ecstatic! This is what I had been waiting for, to be discovered! I got into a tizzy, wrote four chapters and realized it’s not turning out the way I wanted it to. Defeat is not an easy thing to accept and it made me feel miserable. From ecstasy to agony, in three months flat! But now I have made up my mind. I will write a book, if I am ready for it and not because I am expected to.

Two years down the line, writing has become a part of me. It is almost like an obsessive need now. The days I don’t get to scribble my stray thoughts in my diary, I feel lost. As if an important part of me is missing. I still get butterflies in my stomach when I hit the publish button – because I dread letting you down. I still labour over my posts to get the economy of expression, to get the punch lines right. What if I end up sounding funny for the wrong reasons! And I still make the husband read my posts and give his suggestions before I publish – even when he is dog-tired at the end of the day and is about to sink into deep slumber!

I have always avoided mentioning names in my few interviews as a blogger. People who have become dear friends, friends whose opinions I value and respect. What if I forget someone really important? The last thing I want is to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

Zephyr, Snow Leopard, Maitreyee, Samadrita, Alka, Bhavana, Priyanka, Kartikay, Chintan, Suruchi, you mean the world to me. And to those of you who write such beautiful mails to me appreciating my work, I feel honoured. If some of you are upset that I did not review your blog or a post a comment, I apologize. Time is a luxury for me.

There, I managed to sound like an Oscar acceptance speech. And I have yet to thank my dog, Jeejuz, the husband, my daughter (not necessarily in that order).

Let me end with a warning. You can love me, you can hate me – but you can’t stop reading A-Musing! If you do, I will come and haunt your dreams (*insert evil laugh*). Scared you into submission, didn’t I?

A very happy birthday to your blog Auntius Purbus. Don't worry, you won't have to haunt anyone. Only a fool would stop reading this blog.
And there will always be people who will criticise you. Why bother about them so much?
And I agree with you about your book plan. The novel they wanted you to write was not you. The day you write, it will be an international best seller.
And *sniff* you mentioned me *sniff*
On a more serious note. You truly gave an Oscar acceptance speech. And yeah, you don't scare me *Insert Evil-er Laugh* :P

  2. Such a sweet post and very apt too. You are feeling reminiscent, aren't you? Keep blogging!

You know I was never into the habit of emailing any blogger, and when I started out, I did not want anyone to read my blog except the few that I had shared my blog URL with. I wanted to share personal details and did not wish anyone sitting anywhere to read it. How naive was I? Till very recently, I did not add any bloggers to FB too because I again felt that it was too personal. But now as I move out from the very personal to the general space, I am happy reaching out and connecting with people. And blogging does connect you to so many wonderful people who care about your life and your opinion and as I've discovered are so very motivating too. I have made some great friends along the way and hope to meet them all personally too some day. The strange part is that my real-life friends and family rarely comment on my blog. They tell me over the phone or email :). I guess, each one of us has a story about blogging. Unlike you, the start of my professional writing career somewhere got egged on by my blogging!

"I will write a book, if I am ready for it and not because I am expected to."
These words struck a chord with me personally.

Blog for whatever reasons you like; you do a great job at it!

  5. Guess I have struck early at your fan-infested blog! As I type this here I can see a lone snow leopard but I have this feeling that he's always crouching in the shrubbery around A-musing.

It is a meditative post straight off your heart. I can identify with the underlying sentiment. You write well enough and I believe I've been dropping in for quite some time now. You can, of course, write fiction if Chetan Bhagat can. I remember having remarked something unkind on one such work of yours. However, I had merely attempted to point the pitfalls on the road rather than having intended to warp you.

And Purba, I'm already green with envy at the revelation that publishing houses have warmed up to your musings. I am also red, livid with rage, for not mentioning me in that list!

    Never mind, though!

  10. Happy Blogaversary!

It's been long yet lovely journey since the first time I read your blog posts. I still remember being instantly attracted to your writing because of one thing that stood out the most:

    correct grammar!

Seriously! In this world of ellipses and exclamations (and half-hearted sentences in between) your posts were a breath of fresh air. And you've only perfected the 1000-word article over these years.

Thank you for raising the bar and inspiring a whole generation of writers to outdo their best!

I hope you're celebrating with lots of champagne!

A Very Happy Birthday to A-Musing.
"I will write a book, if I am ready for it and not because I am expected to" - exactly what happened to me too. That's why, like you, I keep blogging. I feel there is more satisfaction in blogging which has become a part of my daily life.
But it looks like now I will have to pull out my hibernating manuscript and try and complete my book.
    All the Best.

Now, let us get to the post and exhume it bit by bit shall we? Nay, just kidding! I'd not trespass sacred grounds.
It is really amusing and delightful experience to read what you have to share. I was never (and don't intend to be so) a great fan of what happens around, especially with the political system of India (Though I understand it is very irresponsible of me to be this way). I gather tit-bits of info from here and there and then when I read you morphing them into an intricate pattern of humourous posts in a well organized manner, I really feel good. Many times, you bowl me out with the wit and punchlines.

I hope your long lost friend (did you say you lost him in a Yog Shivir? :P) reads this, and understands that what is, is, and not believing in it like cocking the head into the sand like an ostrich won't make it go away.

I wish you success, and dearly await the time when you really write down a book and publish it.

    Blogging rocks!

Books or no books, we can always carve a niche with different ideas and ways....Do something that others don't ;) And, inshah allah, book will happen when you are ready...

    1. Readers! you can never take them for granted. Some posts are slow starters (especially serious ones) but become a roaring success.

That's the beauty of it - success comes when you least expect it.

    1. I used to be one of your biggest fans. But then you took a long hiatus and the one or two articles you published sounded so half-hearted.

Visited your site again and discovered RAJA IS BACK WITH A BANG!

  60. Purba,

Your journey to blogging told so well. It is almost same with me as I too write to satisfy my urge to write. One should write what one feels is right as per own conscience without any fears, I find your posts mostly that way. Please do keep up your independent flow of thoughts, editing by your husband included.

    Take care

PS : I was without internet for over a week.

  61. Hi purba, you write very well and it always is an enbalming experience to go through your blog. I suppose a blog gets differentiated from the scribble of a graffiti only on two counts - style and discipline. You fare well on both. Kudos

  67. I came to your blog very early, about mid-way last year, when i connected to Indiblogger, but couldn't read on a regular basis until very recently.
You truly have the observation skills and humor glands of Charles Dickens :) Also, the poignancy, as it reflected in this post.
And i'd love to read the book, if you choose to write one...
