Every birth is a solemn occasion in Dharuhera. Critical decisions have to be made. Will it be sweets or will it be poison, this time? Ratan Mithai stocks both. The baby wails, the elders put a heavy lid on their emotions before they rush to check what’s between its legs. If it’s a boy, the men take out their desi revolvers and start shooting in the air. A little medal that reads “licensed to thrill” is hung around his lil thingie. If it’s a girl, the women start beating their chests. All sixteen of them, who were allowed to live so that they could cook and bear more sons. Now comes the dilemma. Should we bury her alive, poison her or wring her tiny neck?
A girl is a burden. Who has the money and the patience to nurture her, protect her from fellow wolves, arrange for her dowry and get her married when she barely hits her teens!
Even a buffalo is more pampered than she is.
It’s possible she might live. But only if the father faints after banging his wife’s head against the wall or is too busy milking buffaloes in the shed. If she’s allowed to live, she better uphold her family’s izzat. Look what happened to Renu! That stupid girl had to be burnt alive because she fell in love with a lower caste dog.
Is it fair to burden khap taaus with such life threatening decisions? Especially if that blasted girl is your own granddaughter? What to do. These are but small sacrifices one has to make for family’s honour.
And now there just sixteen girls in the town. Sixteen against 1786 men. All of them hormonal. The men I mean. All of them made to believe that they are god’s gift to humanity.
Take Vicky for instance. The village stud. Now this title goes to the most virile. His licensed to thrill organ has travelled far and wide, from village to village. What can you do, when out of the dozen women in your village, two of them are your mother and grandmother and the rest of them are busy looking like boys, wrestling in their father’s akhara! He tried his luck with one but got beaten up so badly that his mojo threatened to divorce him. So, he had no choice but to go the nearest village and rape somebody else’s mother or sister. Kya karein, life is like that only.
Vicky has now set his sights higher. He wants to go to Goodgaon – the mythical city of Apsaras. His cousins Rakesh and Dinesh had told him about this millennium city with no electricity and water. Where girls are not only allowed to be born, but are educated. They find jobs, take care of themselves and also have the permission to have fun. They wear small, small dresses and show cleavage that have no bite marks on them. Kalyug hai, bhai kalyug.
In his village girls are spoilt for choices. They can either get killed, raped, married off at 15 or take to wrestling.
So, he takes Sukhdev chachu’s SUV to Goodgaon. The same SUV that Chachu had bought after selling his farmlands for crores to Vadra Loan Company (VLC). He wears his red satin shirt, imported from Mumbai and keeps six buttons open to show off his thick gold chain on his hairy chest. He wants to make friendship with the loose Apsaras of Goodgaon.
But when he tries to say hello to one of them and pats her bottom, he gets a kick on his balls.
Saali! I am the Prince of Darhuhera. My mother fasted for 15 consecutive Mondays for me. My dad killed two toll attendants to celebrate my birth! You, need to be taught a lesson.
At the Police Station, the girl with torn clothes and haunted eyes is interrogated ruthlessly by the SHO. Police constable, Mangat Ram his chachera chachu, takes him aside and slaps his gelled hair affectionately. Bahut naughty to ha gaya hai tu. Tere liye lagta hai Bangal se biwi mangwani padhegi! (You have become very naughty. Looks like, we’ll have to get a bride for you from Bengal)
To be born a girl in Haryana is an ordeal worse than hell. The Chachu,Taus, Chautalas and Vickys will make sure, when you finally leave for your heavenly abode, you never want to be born again.

A sad commentary on the hapless state of affairs! All happening in the neighborhood of the world 's apathetic crime capital.
ReplyDeleteAnd the victims continue to be treated as perpetrators of the crime.
DeleteExtremely well written. You have very well shown the true state of affairs in Haryana. My parents stay in Kurukshetra. Though, such cases are less heard of in Kurukshetra and more in the adjoining areas of Pehowa and Kaithal, yet even the daughter of an IAS officer was not spared early this year in Kurukshetra. As for your blog, it truely deserves to be in the top blogs! Keep up the excellent work!
ReplyDeleteWhat surprises me is that such medieval practices enjoy political patronage. Even a Naveen Jindal dare not go against the Khap.
DeleteAnd thank you so much for the appreciation.
i thnk girl should be appreciated all over the world and u can imagine if the world is without woman u cant do anythning so give respect to man u all hauve mother and sister so dont try this at public place .......
Deleteand its woman not man.....
DeleteDi, that was a really sad and confronting article. Having grown up in safe and comfortable environments (predominantly), although I'm aware of such situations...it's just unbelievable to imagine that as a thing you face daily :-(
ReplyDeleteThe freedom we take for granted is a luxury for many. I wish, women in Haryana find the courage to demand their rights.
DeleteHaryana is going to the dogs (and I mean no derespect to the canines). Maybe this is what the Mayans saw when they predicted the end of the world.
ReplyDeleteI wish the Mayans meant these senile a#$h*&^$@!
DeleteThey deserve hell.
It is indeed a very sad situation there. And with Khaap's ruling every village...the situation does not seem to get any better.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that Neemkheda village in Haryana became the first village to have an all woman Panchayat.
DeleteSpeechless!!
ReplyDeleteYes, that's exactly how it is!
I don't think anyone could've told it better. Beautifully written!!
Scary for us, reality for many.
DeleteI have to ask honestly... why isnt there a single case of vigilante justice or mob justice there.. surely if the land is so lawless in Haryana, then the rage of the victims family should also come through... Believe me, I am so damn tired of these a****les : so brazen and shameless - as if its a rite of passage to rape someone they covet ! and for that also, some idiot political spokesperson said its politically motivated..
ReplyDeleteIt's because the men in that state make and break the laws. It's because rules, injustice is solely the prerogative of women. It's because Sonia Gandhi visiting victims, doesn't change a thing.
DeleteSigh!
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is how Man finally Kills himself! :(
Unlikely.
DeleteDont know what to say! Words fail me completely! That was such a gory story and yet so very close to reality.
ReplyDeleteWhen will we, as a society, come to our senses, I wonder :(
Brilliant and extremely hard-hitting!
I didn't feel good writing this. Knowing, what's fiction for me is the stark reality for a lot of women out there.
DeleteI think all the women should leave Haryana and boycott all the Taus. Ten years down the line Vicky will be marrying Jimmy to calm down his hormones and the Khaps will have a new bull to control.
ReplyDeleteThe way things are in Haryana, all we can do is to wait for all the Khap members to grow old and die. Things will be better after that.
Truth be told. Vicky does deserve Jimmy.
DeleteAnd why villages continue to put up with the Khap, remains a mystery to me!
I think the habitants of those areas in Haryana should buy some pistols and bullets and start to kill every single rapist one by one and kill those khap, taus and all rapist also.Kill 10 rapist daily. And haryana will clean with in month.somebody surely ll have to take action against them,i mean against these taus and against the haryanvi rapist if they would like to live or survive in Haryana. Now there is no other option.
DeletePurba, is this really really true... Say no please. I cannot digest this anymore, cannot believe I come from the same country!!
ReplyDeleteThis is not a figment of my imagination, Bhavana. This. Is. India.
DeleteA country where a woman is worshiped as a goddess and then raped to please a itch. I fell so ashamed, and the funny part is the people who actually should believe it is all correct.
ReplyDeleteSign !
Kalyug indeed.
We need more educated women in this country. Not the power hungry who are only interested in playing with the electorate.
DeletePurba,
ReplyDeleteI feel so ashamed to say anything on this factual state of affairs, even digs at some persons or customs.
Take care
I feel ashamed to be part of this system.
DeleteI so wanted to write on this but was at loss of words...This post has shown how to write a hard-hitting, absorbing and relevant post.
ReplyDeleteThat ridiculous statement by Chautala angered a lot of us.
DeleteBiting satire. Wish it weren't true. Sadly this is exactly the same situation in Faridabad, where I overheard a cop stationed outside a mall in the city tell another, "Girls come to the mall to get f@@@ed
ReplyDeleteReally??
DeleteThe kind of pathetic excuses men make for their warped mentality.
Men like him deserve to be flogged in public.
You know it is 'kalyug' when a satire isn't really a satire but more of a reality. I so want to write a hate mail to the khaaps and cc it to Chautala as well, with a special mention.
ReplyDeleteYou know it's Kalyug, when rape is the fastest growing crime in the country. It has registered an astounding leap of 134% since 1971.
Deletehttp://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-11-07/india/30368929_1_major-crimes-cognizable-crimes-crime-statistics
mam there is a spelling mistake friendship should be spelled as fraaandship :-D
ReplyDeletejokes apart this a good insight of the millenium city of gurgaon
i wish vicky and characters lyk him could read and understand somehing out of it !!
Vicky and Sonus understand only one language - the language of fear.
DeleteHard hitting. Brilliant. Well written. Awful state of affairs.
ReplyDeleteWoah Purba. This is scary. So well written. I was hanging on to each word. Scared, I am, with the state of affairs in this country.
ReplyDeleteSomebody teach them simple mathematics. That 16 against 1728 is an awfully skewed figure.
DeleteBrilliant. Hard hitting.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteCreepy... Well written eye opener but will there be a change sometime?
ReplyDeleteIt has to start with low tolerance for such crimes. Instead of trying to pass them off as minor indiscretions.
Delete'Moral policing' exists in all the states but Khaps are 'law' un to themselves as all know in Haryana but strangely the Government, NGo's,the youth all are keeping quite!
ReplyDeleteThey are keeping quiet because it suits them.
DeleteBrilliantly written Purba... Horrible state of affairs in whole of NCR... And sadly there is no hope for change...
ReplyDeleteThings are taking a turn for the worse.
DeleteAnd in this century it happens! I mean, I was too shocked to speak when I read that some idiot politician said, early marriages are the solution to rape ! As if the rapists ask the girl her marital status before raping. They are shamelessly gangraping, what the hell can early marriage do...? Early means as early as ...what 12? You have explained it so well Purba...And there is more to come. That is the saddest part. More rapists roaming freely. More innocent girls to be victimized. Sad !
ReplyDeleteSpit on the mentality that tries to make us believe that an early marriage is a solution. Get her married off and she's no longer our responsibility. Her husband can rape her, his brothers can join in and we can say - it's none of our business.
DeletePurba this is extremely well written and though its funny and sarcastic it is really hard hitting. The saddest part is that all this is true .. When is this going to change !
ReplyDeleteAm sharing this Purba !
That's the ironic part - all of it is part of somebody's existence
DeleteI stay in Gurgaon and every time I hear of a new case it scares the hell out of me. I can't help but second guess our decision to stay here. But what is the way out Every state has the same scenario. Why are Indian men so pathetic!!!
ReplyDeleteGurgaon is home for me. Either sides of the highway, same city yet so different.
DeleteI stay in Gurgaon and every time I hear of a new case it scares the hell out of me. I can't help but second guess our decision to stay here. But what is the way out Every state has the same scenario. Why are Indian men so pathetic!!!
ReplyDeleteVery powerful post, Purba. What is worrisome is that it seems culture specific, and that by itself is a ticking bomb. Your recent post on sexism is perhaps more on target. It is an universal male attitude, and it is just that some cultures and some families put a higher premium on keeping Tommy on the leash, while others condone it by either smiling it away or looking the other way. The trouble is also with media and advertising. The more we make male-centric films where the woman is just an object, the more we advertise luxury goods with a sexy model tagged along, the more we snap at our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters, the more we are endorsing that women are objects to be used. Given the fact that both the marketing industry and the entertainment industry spend big buck to come up with foolproof strategies (autism, deaf-mute, extra-marital affair, a mystery, a southern siren, piggy chops and tommy), we are dealing with something very powerful. Every small step taken to counter it helps. Very stirring piece.
ReplyDeleteWomen are objectified in all societies. Crimes against women happen even in the most developed societies. But only in India, the men commit these crimes with such impunity and get away with it.
DeleteScary
ReplyDeleteLooks like we men have never ever given up our pre civilized mentality..one with resources{strength and numbers} try to use the weaker ones for their gratifications.
It is indeed shameful that some men still go for girl hunting. This will stop only by strong police action.
Yes, but what do you do when the Police refuses to take such cases seriously and would rather blame the victim.
DeleteIndia before 1947 was far far better than present conditions.
ReplyDeleteHow long there will be no justice till then same situation goes off might be, so sad to say..
One article in times of india busted my mind on Sunday regarding present situation in haryana and non sense statements from CM..
It was Chautala, the ex CM who made that asinine statement.
DeleteAmazing post... Sorry state of affairs... :(
ReplyDeleteThe brighter side is (for there is always a brighter side) - when all the 1786 men turn homosexual because of the lack of vaginas in their gaon, the 16 remaining women will finally be safe.
ReplyDeleteHahaha...what if the men do prefer the same sex but have been seeking out women out of peer pressure?
DeleteIts a bloody vicious cycle - no girls, no problem go rape a few elsewhere. Buy women from some poor miserable village to marry and rape. Convert said 'wife' into a son-bearing machine. Sometimes, others with a thingie can also have a go at her. And then, we see how badly the women are treated, so lets not have any girls anyway! Pretty F***ed up logic, if you ask me. Terribly disturbing, knowng that I have children to raise in this environment. Superb writing!
ReplyDeleteImagine having to tell your child, most men are animals! That she must dress down to save herself!
DeleteA man who rapes woman may be they were suffering from impotency and they cant prove themselves and this rapes occur. and the rape occurs just because of uncivilised people who have never seen the female or girl but they came from a woman's womb only thn also they cant thnk about it . how they can do it
Deletesuch a man are ass holes...
Is Haryana really like this now ?
ReplyDeleteYes.
DeletePurba- i am literally at a loss of words. A deep pain in my heart - is this the same country I was born in ? Hoping the women folk of Haryana come together and fight this. 16 against 1700+ is a very indecently skewed figure. The country as a whole should rally behind the Haryana women to get them their due !
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. Women in Haryana need to rebel against this cruel apathy!
DeleteSuch a hard hitting post!
ReplyDeleteanother downturn of this whole episode is the "purchasing" of brides from poorer states even as far as kerala...sharing of the the hapless woman among the family men, and worst. discarding her when she bears daughters instead of sons....are these men really sane or ridiculously idiotic and insane?
wonder why no one will interfere and bother to set things right? Aamir Khan tried to take up the khaps in one of his episodes of Satyameva Jayate, and he had them baying for his blood!
They are the Taliban of Haryana. Old fogies who believe in mob justice.
DeleteWhat's more, they enjoy political patronage.

Beautiful lyrics and so apt.
DeleteReminds me of the movie Matrubhoomi...a must watch. Tulip Joshi, the lead actress is married off to a guy, but is shared among all the brothers, including the father in law. Why? Because there are no girls in the village. Tulip Joshi herself is raised as a son, so that she can be saved from the clutches of virile men.Sad but a true depiction of things happening now. Its a vicious circle and the girl child has to bear the brunt ultimately by either being a dowry victim or getting raped!
ReplyDeleteSomebody should tell those idiots, for more sons to be born there need to be enough women for men. And if they are killing baby girls, they should also start praying for miracles such as men with wombs.
DeleteOne of the guys who work for us actually got his sister married to a chap in Haryana. Wonder what condition she is in now....or if she still is alive.
ReplyDeletePowerful piece!
I hope she's doing fine.
DeleteVery well described and I hope this opens the eyes of few. It is sad and disheartening to be part of such a country.
ReplyDeleteI wish each one of realizes this well and doesn't become a hypocrite when it comes on them.
Great post, *bow*
Hypocrisy is still caught between what we are supposed to think and what we are actually practicing.
DeleteThank you so much.
You have painted such a true but gruesome picture of the state in Haryana. The hair on my neck practically stood up...
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in Gurgaon, I made sure I stayed away from them, They are animals.
DeleteThe sad and pathetic affair narrated boldly and beautifully!
ReplyDeleteBTW the latest Khap verdict in today's TOI is that 'noodles is a major reason of rapes...'(sic) How pitiably ridiculous!!
The press should refrain from quoting these fools!
DeleteThe value of a human is only equal to the amount of votes it can get you. We, the people who live in Gurgaon, not part of the Khaps, politics and other such paraphernalia mean nothing to the higher ups who might lose thousands of votes by prosecuting someone for rape and murder of women or that of the girl child. Our society is too far gone by making men look like gods while women are treated with less respect than a slave. It is indeed the time for us to go back to living in caves and spend the day building stone tools and lighting fires while our ignorance consumes us from the inside out.
ReplyDeleteIt is an unfortunate society we live in that will not change without some drastic measures to put these inbreds in their place.
The contrasts are so startling, especially in Gurgaon. The MNC crowd that moved to the city for a better lifestyle and the locals who don't think twice before pulling out their gun. The apathetic administration doesn't help much.
DeleteAnd the police! The less I say about them, the better.
It is not just in Harayana, it's happening in every parts of India except the northeast. And the most ridiculous thing is that politicians and khaps are blaming fast food and other stupid things for rapes.
ReplyDeleteWhat about that Guwahati molestation case?
DeleteI dont want to Live...GOD...!O God Take me away with you to my sweet brother, Sanjiv...Tht place is much better..
ReplyDeleteYour wish will be granted soon.
Deleteah the sad and depressing reality of our country..written really well. keep up the good work! hope there are happier things to write about in days to come.
ReplyDeleteCheers to that thought!
DeleteMallika Sherawat made the same buffalo crack during a TV interview. She wasn't smiling when she said it.
ReplyDeleteShe thinks she's the best thing that happened to Haryana.
DeleteSo brave and so hard hitting. Kudos, am sharing. Being father of a girl i hate being in Delhi so close to Haryana.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
DeleteSo brave and so hard hitting. Kudos, am sharing. Being father of a girl i hate being in Delhi so close to Haryana.
ReplyDeleteHard hitting.
ReplyDeleteThough I feel that on this topic you should not have used satire because I am even ashamed to laugh at their stupidity - it is crime, in fact!
But that's how I write :-)
DeleteYour post evokes so many emotions in the readers minds, uppermost being extreme anger clubbed together with sorrow at the plight of girls.Amazing post.
ReplyDeleteAnd knowing that things are not going to get any better is frustrating.
DeleteSo "Goodgaon -- the mythical city of Apsaras" is actually just as bad as any Daruhera in the interior. Loved your writing style... hope such posts have some impact and manage to change something at least.
ReplyDeleteArvind Passey

UNlikely. The chachu, taus are too busy blaming chowmein.
DeleteVery scary situation you have detailed there, grim reality unfortunately. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth :( I hope things improve, but I honestly don't have much hope either.
ReplyDeleteIt's worse than what I've described here.
DeleteOh my God, pretty bad state of affairs over there.
ReplyDeleteWhen will people learn to respect women in India.
Thought provoking post Purba
Keep posting

Good governance can change a lot of things.
DeleteIts very saddening, the truth that this post speaks of. And its even worse when we hear that even the leaders of the region talk about it like its a part of their culture.
ReplyDeleteThe Jaats are well known for their valour. Too bad, the state has now become the rape capital of the country.
DeleteEven a Buffalo is more pampered than a girl..!
ReplyDeleteThat line said it all. Very sad Purba, hope thing change soon.
Dear India, get well soon.
DeleteChilling! But sadly, true...
ReplyDeleteYes!
Deletea tight slap in the face of haryanvi jaats (through this blog)..
ReplyDeletealthough our nation is free today but our outlook, our mentality is quite parochial and we still believe that men are god's superior gift to humanity .. !
such is the sorry state of our nation ...!
:-(
A woman is as important as her male counterpart. In fact it's she who contributes more to it's well-being.
DeleteGod!! That's hard hitting but then it so very true too!!
ReplyDeleteTerrible state of affairs coupled with their nonsense verdicts and statements! :|
To know that it's much worse for so many women out there, fills me with sorrow.
DeleteNot one thing that I could pin point and say, "Naah, that seems like an exaggeration", if any, things are worse.
ReplyDeleteWell written. Leaves an impression.
Glad you liked :-)
Deletevery well written piece.
ReplyDeleteI have a personal anecdote on the situation...when my daughter was born 5 years ago, I was dreading the familiar event of Eunuchs descending at my house & creating trouble - giving lots of duaen (blessings)and asking for a lot of money !
But to my surprise no one turned up...and when I asked about it the maid told us that in Haryana, Hijraas (Eunuchs)don't go to houses where the girl child is born, the logic is that 'woh bechaare to dukhi honge, hum wahan ja kar kya karenge'
From the state of being dreadful about them, I actually asked the maid to call them...they turned up, surprised & apprehensive, but when they realized where I was coming from they were quite emotional about the whole thing...strangely enough, my fear of the Eunuchs disappeared that day...such is life...
And what a wonderful gesture. To announce to the world that the girl is as welcome in this world...That she will be cherished by her parents....
DeleteI know for a fact that I wanted a girl more than I wanted a boy.
Sometimes, I am ashamed to be a guy. These bastards should be castrated.
ReplyDeleteThe sad part is, it's the perpetrator who walks away with the sympathy and the victim is made to feel guilty.
DeletePurba I'm sharing this post. Spreading the word and creating awareness are our strongest weapons.
ReplyDeleteHave posted and shared this about 100 times on fb. Just feel people need to read and understand how bad this is. Hope you're fine with it.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply. Thank you for sharing.
DeleteI am scared like anything. Have shared this post on FB. Brilliant work!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteAnd you wonder if things will ever change.
ReplyDeleteNo words to say about this bitter truth.
ReplyDeleteThere will be a day in Haryana when there will be a single woman in the whole village and these morons will be end-up killing one another to just get her.
Jab paap ka ghada bharta hai to wo fut jaata hai aur uss ghade ke sare keede makode jamin par dum tod dete hain. yahi hona hai Haryana ka aane wale samay me.
Sad is the plight of this state!! Somewhere the line that differentiates a man from an animal blurs down.....perhaps, animals are better......years ago, there was this movie - matrubhoomi which for obvious reasons was banned in our country, but brought out a disturbing scenario that can happen in future, when there would be no girls left and a whole village would be fighting and killing among each other just to get hold of one female who would be alive to keep the inhumane race going!! Couldn't watch it.....i admit, I have a weak stomach.....but it won't be surprising for this state to face something like that in future.....This state is one blatant example of the saying - Absolute power corrupts....not just the system, but the society, the character, the body and the soul!!
ReplyDeleteA change has to come in the mindset of people.
Brilliant post, purba!!
Keep them coming!!
cultue Haryana and west UP are shame on our country....in these states people are devils. why Delhi has more rape cases compare to Mumbai and Chennai just cause of these states...in natives of Delhi also has similar culture to Haryana..Can you believe jaat and Gujjar clans of so called modern city dont allow their girls to have mobile phones, they dont allow to wear jeans...Jaat Gujjar people spent their all time in Gym or in teasing girls...they use girls from Others state coming from Delhi...you can see every max male models are from Haryana and how many girls models have u seen from any jaat and Gujjar community? in delhi situation is worst but you will speak against jaat gujjar evil people you will be taged as racist...Girls who date jaat dont have bain? My frnd was datinga jaat boy from Meerut...she used to live with him in his flat after few months he forced her to have sex with his all frnds and brothes..and even his uncle came to fuck her with him...its there culture..thn she came back to dehradun
ReplyDeleteBloody animals these haryanvi jaats..as bad as ISIS
ReplyDeletePowerful post!Is the situation really that bad in Haryana villages.Very sad indeed.
ReplyDeleteVery gud hats off.... Purba u must b from haryana. Well I'm not I'm from western up.the shit u r talking about I have not seen it
ReplyDeleteBe it my family relatives or villages our girls are more pampered than boys. Some people talking here are ass burned. Definitely itni jelisy India m Muslim s nhi h jitni jaato s h.... We r strong and more bful than u all. Definitely foetcide is a problem in Havana but u can't blame everyone for a no of ass holes. Nobody never talks about the medals we gave u in sports. Nobody talks about the majority of soldiers in army and other forces... .we r fierce. And many people talking shit here knows their reality... Think about urself first.someone is talking they don't allow their girls to wear jeans..... I personally know man from every single community who does that... .and they do wear jeans....jeans are generally not wearer in villages all over India. And man.....there are more castes than jaat in Havana. ...so all u brilliant minds thinkover
Just culture refers to just culture.. ..look in ur own pants.... .we r far better than all of India. The only difference is that I don't blame anyone.. .because I'm not jealous of anyone. ....only jaat have the quality to make u all jealous. ..and just imagine it army without jaats.... And jatts ur nothing bro
