When my heart went vroom vroom

Cartoonstock.com
Like any another young girl, I used to find bikes and bikers incredibly hot. Not the paunchy, uncle type but the dude in unwashed jeans who zig zagged past your dad’s car. With a messenger bag slung carelessly across his chest, his muscled forearm expertly revving up his mean machine – didn’t you all follow him with puppy dog eyes, steadfastly ignoring the kid brother smirking on the seat next to yours! The hot one invariably had a cool femme clutching to him for dear life, her tresses flying silkily behind her. How many times have we tried to catch his eye as he waited impatiently at the red light crossing! I did it all the time.

Girls love fantasizing about bad boys. It’s another matter that they prefer settling down with the enfant terrible’s nerdy brother. Risk is hardly conducive to a happily ever after.

We did have a neighbour who fancied himself as a biker dude. Actually he wasn’t exactly a neighbour but G Aunty’s lover. G Aunty a loud, over dressed woman who fancied herself as Rekha’s local avatar, loved throwing parties. Not the regular parties but the type that had lots of gana, bajanaa and uncles ogling at girls shaking their booty to – jab chhaaye mera jaado koi bachh naa paye...Haaai.

Every time I walked back from the bus stop, he would be squatting and giving his machine a vigorous polish. But he was stocky, balding, kind of ugly, very-very old and sartorially challenged. When you are fourteen anyone above twenty seems ancient. Munna Bhaisahab(his universally accepted nick) walked with a swagger and even had a wife. She hardly looked like the suffering, embittered spouse. I guess she was glad to get him off her back.

But I refused to let such unsavoury memories mar my dogged devotion to the biker clan.

When I finally got a chance to ride a motorbike I was terrified. Since the chap driving it was not a boyfriend, I couldn’t even cling to him for dear life. I must have looked quite a sight, sitting ramrod straight, looking petrified. My dying to be boyfriend in college would often try to lure me for a date with the promise of a bike ride. But my brother used to call me Mother Teresa and I tried my best to live up to the title bequeathed upon me.

I did date a biker chap briefly. In fact he was my long time crush. When he finally deigned to look at me, I collapsed like a pack of stacked cards. I often hear boys complain about girls or rather the lack of them. In my opinion most of them don’t even know how to treat a girl right. Imagine sitting in a restaurant with your “Greek god”, all you can notice is the coy looks directed at him from left, centre and right - yet he has eyes for no one but you?

My Greek God now looks like a worn out gent and I can’t stop thanking my lucking stars for not having ended up with him. Getting together is easy when you have moved apart.

God always rewards good girls and look what he had in store for me - a man who was an answer to all my prayers. And what’s more he HAD A BIKE and muscled forearms! Since we were to get married in six months and I was desperate to make the most of our courtship. Unfortunately my parents’ idea of a rendezvous with my fiancĂ© was rather unusual. The entire family would frolic together at the Baha’i temple/Mughal Gardens/some other random park. So it became my responsibility to engineer our dates. It was during this phase I discovered my innate talent for fiction. Sudden emergencies would crop up, I had to save my distressed friends, submit a form urgently and who else would come to my rescue but my Superman on his bike! And did we have fun whizzing all around the town. Me clinging to his warm back, almost throttling him with all my unspent passion... Laughing at his jokes including the unfunny ones and him keeping a straight face when I would turn up with my eyelids smudged with a violent shade of blue... At 22, my make-up sensibilities were rather awkward. What I lacked in skills, I would make up with myriad colours.

I was now married to a biker dude and I was on a high – is that what you think right? It’s only when I started co-habiting with one, did I realize I had a rival vying for my beloved’s attention. Every weekend he would spend inordinate hours grooming his bike. Admiring it from different angles, giving anguished cries when he discovered little scratches and when I would say it’s just a stupid bike – he would make me the unwilling recipient of his aggrieved looks. Boy! Did it make me mad! To make it worse, I couldn’t even scream at this inanimate object! So I silently put up with it and whined once in a while.

I whined louder every time I had to plonk myself on its backseat to commute. My short hair instead of swaying silkily would billow in perpendicular direction, a million acne would merrily erupt on my face and my nose would be assaulted by the traffic smells. By the time I got off from my high horse, I would be looking like a war ravaged victim from far off Bosnia. Soon I adopted an all new look to save my face – a scarf covering everything visible above my neck, an oversized shade resting on my nose bridge, a wind cheater to protect the rest of me. Why! I even had a cute pair of gloves to wear in the evenings. I was now looking like a commando out to bomb Bosnia.

As newly married we would often get invited to dinner engagements and parties. God forbid if the host decided to see us off. He had put up with agony of seeing us layering up painfully. Just as he was about to say Achha Betaa bye, out came another jacket, cap or scarf! Just like another rabbit from the magician’s hat.

My ride was no longer thrilling, it was a pain. It was either too hot, too cold, too wet for a motor bike. On long trips I would bury my face behind his back and wait for my ordeal to come to an end. My romance with the bike had come to an abrupt end. Just eight months into our marriage and I made him buy a car.

Our biking travails are now part of folklore – little nuggets we sometimes share over a cup of tea.

The other day as I was waiting at the traffic junction, I spotted a dude on his bike – scruffy, almost handsome, his bag slug carelessly; he was tapping his foot impatiently. And I giggled like a school girl, a little self consciously. But when he took off like a maniac, zipping through lanes I crinkled my nose in disdain. Show off, I muttered under my breath.

The woman took over the young girl in me and I sighed wistfully!

I love bikers and I always wore helmet when dating Saurabh. I think I was more of a risk taker in college and never cared about it all in college and roamed freely on a broken scooter :)

    Bikers are fun :D

But saving grace, it had your humour. :)
And I can empathize with Mr. Ray. It is not "just" a bike. I used to ride a Royal Enfield in college, and riding gives you a high. It is like being a knight in the middle ages, riding a horse and following the code of chivalry.

  4. Such a lovely post! Fascination with bikers has been universal. I so use to tease my sis that she would get hitched by a scooter-wala (luckily she is now married to a sedan owner). I didnt care about the bikes much but yes the cocky helmets and leather jackets make most bikers already appealing! but alas we all have to settle down at some point :)

  6. hehe Nice post and very funny. I guess we all loved bikes especially because of the awesome portrayal of bikers in movies. Don't remember having any crushes on real-life bikers myself. But did enjoy a few bike rides with male friends during college. There is something very macho about a bike. My husband and I had a car and then he bought a bike for close distances. He also had an old bike at my in-law's place. I loved riding that one with him where I could press myself close to him and do naughty stuff pretty shamelessly. I loved the intimacy, and as that was rare, it was enjoyable too. The one we bought to go to closeby places was sold off in a few years because of lack of use. But, I am always game to ride on a bike :). I had a fantasy to be able to ride a bike someday myself. Looks like that isn't happening anytime soon :D.

In Delhi you need to be exceptionally brave to drive a two wheeler - apart from the leery looks, one is expected to handle amorous men trying to topple you over.

Maybe it's because I lived in Chicago for so long. It's such a cold, rainy climate that bikes were just not enjoyable. But a nice, warm train on a cold winter day lets me sleep for an hour as it slowly chugs it's way to my station. :-)

So taxis and autos it has been before we could afford to buy a car. I used to love riding with my brother on his scooter as we raced the clouds when i was in college in Nagpur. 26. Being a serious rider(I don't like to be called a Biker because that also includes the nut jobs in the cities who give a damn about safety or responsible riding); I must admit the relationship I have with Laetitia is that of loyalty, respect and love. A rider connects with the two wheels the way no one else can; and yes being one on the highways; I must admit I get all the attention from cars and other tourists. Being part of the Bullet riding fraternity; and the numerous riders I know, I can say for everyone that they aren't rash or reckless but responsible. Bullets top at 90kph but ride hard and consistently. Bikers who are seen on plastics like the Pulsars etc. can never fall in love with their two wheels because they are inanimate objects. Bullets have a soul and mind of their own; they leak oil and even fall apart at times, but we still love them as our own children mainly for their imperfections. And believe me you, Laetitia runs best only when spoken to; and she does get a scolding once in a while too after which she behaves. Only a rider and not a biker can tell you these stories; and there are numerous ones at that! Riders are a sentimental lot, and yes I have had numerous complaints from other women; but first loves are really first loves and one shouldn't bother competing but rather join the party on the highway! You should too!

When I get married, I know for a fact that someone who doesn't appreciate the rider in me will never be at peace. I ride out alone, for days at a stretch; feed of the wind and highway. Its a symbiotic relationship that a rider has; a woman in his life needs to be part of it just the way the two wheels are. It might sound sexist but that's the way it goes for anyone with a strong passion.

    1. I enjoy reading about your biking adventures, especially the part when you and your gang demolish mountains of bhajiya and paavs.
You and "Laetitia(nice name btw) have a symbiotic relationship. Only you know the elation you experience when you take to the road - we can only feel happy for you.

I am sure you will find a girl who will respect you and your passions and won't write cribby posts like these :D

  27. Enjoyed this perspective of being a biker's girl. Being a guy who has had to spend a lot of time behind his girl on her bike, I could so totally identify with the issues. The hair blowing into my and no, she will not wear a helmet as it messes with her hair do more than the 50 kmph wind does, the layering down and layering up, the long conversations where I couldn't make out anything over the sound of the bike, but had to keep saying hmm-hmm, etc. Bikers, regardless of gender, have this strange ego that stops them from using your car instead.

  49. Hahaha! This is awesome :).
Me being in my teens right now, I find it real cute when guys whoosh past in their bikes :D. Actually I love it ;). My brother always takes me on long rides on his bike and we whoosh past everyone :D.
The funny thing is, I obsess about his bike more than he does :P.
I do exactly the same thing to my bro's bike what your hubby does to his bike :D :).

    Awesome post btw :).
    Nice experience :D.
    Hehe!!

    1. Sweetheart as a Mom to a teen, I am hardly your Didi :))

And if you love bikes so much, why don't you get one for yourself? Of course you have to turn 18 first.

  52. This piece, I did share with the wife. The cartoon epitomizes a true life experience when in college. Well.. Biking days are back, thankfully :) Nicely scripted, a lot of room for empathy.

    1. The chap who sketched the cartoon is a genius. Did you actually let her slip away?

      And glad you liked.

  54. That was fun Purba, took me back in time.Hobbs and I pooled in our internship stipend and paid installments to buy our first vehicle-a bike.It was romantic initially to race the highway during rains to have lunch at various dhabas but my love affair soon ended when he would drive painfully slow in the name of safety and invite funny looks on the street.

  57. well, i'll be surprised if i can find a single new point. it izz deh same old woman's fascination curve with motorcycles that most serious bikers are bored with. In fact, notice how men never notice how women feel about the bike? Nothing new to see and no need to argue about the basic tenement of A to B transportation. Now, if any of you expressed concern that your man sits in a 500kg plus metal box with three empty seats around him, guzzles depleting fossil fuels exponential to his vehicle weight and takes four times longer to get back from work and into the arms of his beloved wife who want's him to drive a car instead of a bike, Then! i would be surprised.

    Close, but no cigar.
